Every platform enforces a different caption length, and getting it wrong means a post that trails off into "…" or fails to publish outright. Here's the current reference for all nine networks Post Bridge posts to, plus the practical truncation notes that the raw numbers don't tell you.
The numbers that bite people
X (Twitter) — 280
Still 280 for the caption on standard accounts. Links count against it. If you go long, your post becomes a "show more" — fine for a thread, bad for a one-liner meant to land at a glance.
Bluesky — 300
The one people forget. It's lower than you think and there's no "show more" — go over and you simply can't post. This is the limit our composer flags most often.
LinkedIn — 3,000
Generous, but only the first ~210 characters show before "…see more." Front-load the hook; the algorithm and the human both decide in that first line.
Instagram — 2,200
Long, but only ~125 characters render before truncation in-feed, and it requires media — a caption with no image or video won't post.
Threads — 500
A comfortable middle ground. Longer than X, shorter than LinkedIn; usually the caption you can share across the most networks unchanged.
How we handle it
Rather than make you memorize this table, Post Bridge shows a live character count for every selected platform as you type, turning red before you'd hit a limit — and lets you write a shorter override for the strict ones (looking at you, Bluesky) while everyone else keeps the full caption. You see the truncation in the preview before you post, not after.
Scheduling Instagram specifically? There's a dedicated guide for that. Otherwise, open the composer and watch the counts move.
